Today’s episode on sloth is the last in a seven part series on the seven deadly sins.

Saint Quotes of the Week

“God gives us some things, as the beginning of faith, even when we do not pray. Other things, such as perseverance, he has only provided for those who pray.” – St. Augustine

Challenge of the Week

Dinner Table Questions

1. What obstacles in your life encourage slothfulness, both physical and spiritual?
2. What practical ways can you combat an inactive spiritual life? What ways as a family?
3. Do you procrastinate? How can we motivate each other to perform tasks timely?

#50: Avarice (Deadly Sin Series 6 of 7)

Today’s episode on avarice is the sixth in a seven part series on the seven deadly sins.  We also go on a tangent in the beginning about baseball card trading.  Sorry to those not interested in that!

Saint Quotes of the Week

“Against the sin of avarice the Creator, the creature, and Nature alike warn us. (1) The Creator by prohibiting it—St. Luke 12:15, ‘Take heed and beware of covetousness.’ (2) The creature, in giving itself and its possessions. St. Augustine says, ‘It is a great sign of Divine goodness that every creature thinks to give somewhat of its own nature.’ (3) Nature, by restraining it—Tobit 4:16, ‘See thou never do to another what thou would hate to have done thee by another.'” – St. Thomas Aquinas (Homily on Pride and Covetousness: Third Sunday after the Epiphany)

“As the drawing near of the soul unto God with the affection of the will is the source of all good, so the going away from Him, through love of created things, issues in all evils and calamities, in proportion to the joy and affection which unite us to the creature.” – St. John of the Cross (Ascent of Mount Carmel)

“No event has so corroborated my belief in the next life as Charles Williams did simply by dying. For when the idea of death and the idea of Williams thus met in my mind, it was the idea of death that was changed.” – C. S. Lewis wrote this epitaph on the death of his friend Charles Williams

Challenge of the Week

Give away something that you own that is a true sacrifice (not just excess stuff that you want to get rid of anyway).  Do this as a way to purify yourself from earthly attachments.

Dinner Table Questions

1. What is one thing that would be very difficult for you to give up?
2. How can you detach yourself from your material possessions?
3. When was a time when you felt greed for money, possessions or accomplishing tasks?

#47: Envy (Deadly Sin Series 4 of 7)

Today’s episode on envy is the fourth in a seven part series on the seven deadly sins.

Saint Quotes of the Week

“For many weep with them that weep, but still do not rejoice with them that rejoice, but are in tears when others rejoice; now this comes of grudging and envy.” – St. John Chrysostom

“Thenceforth envy rages on the earth, in that he who is about to perish by jealousy obeys the author of his ruin, imitating the devil in his jealousy; as it is written, “But through envy of the devil death entered into the world.” Therefore they who are on his side imitate him.” – St. Cyprian

“Envy not the great ones of this world then riches, honors, dignities, or applause given them by men; but envy rather those who most love Jesus Christ, who undoubtedly enjoy greater happiness than the first monarchs of the earth. Return thanks to the Lord for enlightening you to discover the vanity of all wordly things, for the sake of which so many unhappily perish.” – St. Alphonsus Liguori

Dinner Table Questions

1. When do you find yourself being the most envious?
2. In addition to envying the material possessions of others, do you ever envy someone’s spiritual possessions?
3. If you have kids, do you notice them being envious of other kids?  What can we do as parents to teach our kids not to be envious of others?

Today’s episode on lust is the third in a seven part series on the seven deadly sins.

Saint Quote of the Week

“There is no dignity when the human dimension is eliminated from the person. In short, the problem with pornography is not that it shows too much of the person, but that it shows far too little.” – Pope St. John Paul II
